Strawberry Mint Margaritas On The Rocks

Every time I post a recipe for margaritas, our Facebook page gets tons of “likes.” So yes, I am pandering to your whims with this recipe for Strawberry Mint Margaritas.

Granted, it is a spectacular recipe. Fresh strawberries crushed together with cool mint leaves, freshly squeezed Mexican lime juice, and blended with Madhava agave syrup and aged tequila, served over blocky bits of quality ice…this cocktail couldn’t be more refreshing.

 

How to Prepare A Strawberry Mint Margarita

 

To me, frozen margaritas seem like the popular kid in high school. Not much to them, but everyone still worships them. Even though I love a good, frozen margarita, an un-frozen cocktail on the rocks gives your palate a better opportunity to savor the luscious strawberry juice, the notes of mint, and the silvery high tones of tequila. If a beverage is too cold, your taste buds go numb, and you miss out on most of  the subtle, yet  complex combination of flavors.  Using a cocktail shaker is essential in achieving the perfect temperature for your beverage, for maximum palate appeal (plus, you look super cool when using it, distracting your party guests from that popular kid.)

Muddlers are usually reserved for mojitos, another Latin American cocktail requiring mint. You can use a muddler in this recipe to crush the berries and mint together. If you don’t have a muddler, a wooden spoon works well-ish.

Good tequila should be savored, slightly chilled and in tiny portions. Usually an excellent tequila reposado should be left unadorned, to appreciate the subtle smoky characteristics, and caramel after tones. So I caution you, when you decide to make this cocktail, select your strawberries carefully. Only the reddest, ripest organic strawberry at the peak of flavor will do. Agave syrup is an excellent touch of sweetness, as it is derived from the same mother plant as tequila. Home grown mint is even better. Don’t insult superior tequila by combining it with cheap, thoughtless ingredients.

I highly encourage you to enjoy this cocktail outdoors, on a porch. And make two or four, so that you are not enjoying it alone. I can almost see the sunset streaming through the ice in your Strawberry Mint Margarita even now. Can you?

Strawberry Mint Margarita Recipe

 

  • 2 red ripe strawberries
  • 5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 ½ tsp agave syrup or granulated sugar
  • Juice of 1 fresh lime
  • 1 oz tequila
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • Fresh Strawberries and Mint for garnish

Using a wooden muddler or spoon, crush together the strawberries and mint in a cocktail shaker or glass measuring cup. Squeeze in the juice of the lime, add the agave syrup or sugar, tequila and triple sec. Add a couple of cubes of ice, and shake or stir to combine well. Strain into your favorite margarita glass, and garnish with fresh slices of strawberry and mint leaves.
